A Coffee and A Yarn was established as a concept cafe in Newtown, Sydney in 2010. It distinguished itself from other cafes on King Street by combining good coffee and locally produced food with a yarn shop. Ellie Teunissen combined her passions for knitting and a good coffee to create the concept cafe. Knitters and non-knitters alike sat around community tables where activities included knitting, crocheting and on special occasions, poetry reading. Clients were encouraged to knit and yarn or simply to soak in the atmosphere and enjoy a good coffee. They were also able to purchase a range of organic yarns.
With the closure of the Newtown concept cafe in 2012, the idea of “A Coffee and A Yarn” has remained with Ellie. The company’s prime focus is on sourcing and selling a range of yarns and related products whose manufacture minimises impact on Earth’s fragile environments whilst at the same time enabling social wellbeing through the traditional crafts of knitting and crocheting.
In November, 2020, Ellie reopened A Coffee and A Yarn in the Penrose Village General Store in The Southern Highlands of New South Wales. The original concept of the cafe lives on and continues to provide excellent coffee, sourced from Five Senses Coffee, and a range of ethically sourced organic yarns. Social knitting is once again encouraged and lessons offered to knitters of all abilities.
